Journalists do get training on tactics ( Centurion Risk Assessment Services for example) and you might want to read about Brent Sadlers experience with two gunmen and the resulting fire fight that made the difference between life and death. No the government is not issuing weapons to reporters. Reporters work for private industry. The silencer has the obvious functionality as to not attract further attention from nearby warlords/rebels if such an event takes place in an isolated area. BTW Submachine guns are small and fit neatly in concealed spaces as to not attract attention..
It is ugly in southern Iraq, officially any American journalist is now an official target and will be either kidnapped or fired upon, this is not the way
reporters are handled in war zones they typically are left alone but things are different this time around.
