Anyone Else Capturing Graveyard Art?

Post Fri Apr 23, 2004 12:35 pm

No one seems to take the time, money, and artistry needed to carve, mold, or cast such things as mourning angels anymore. Most graveyards want the stones to lie down, slick and unnoticeable in the short grass. I am trying to capture some of the wonders that are left.

I have started putting up my Grave N Images of some of the art that remains around here. I shall continue with the project as long as I can.

If you are shooting this kind of art, could you let me know?

And for all, please visit my galleries and do leave comments.

I have quite a few in a fall album. The cemetary shots start on this page:

and continue for a few pages. These were taken in the Oakwood Cemetary in Troy New York. This is where the original Uncle Sam is laid to rest. I didn't take a picture of his grave since it is rather ordinary. Many wealthy people of the 1800s are buried here from Troy's heyday. Here's an example of what you'll find in my gallery. Graveyards are quite attractive to me in the autumn for some reason.

Graveyards

I enjoy the artwork in these places. Some cannot understand why someone would enjoy photographing in places such as this.
This image "Mary" was photographed at the San Francisco National Cemetery.
While the stone itself is not very artistic the rendition I believe is.

we've got a few in this gallery. i absolutely love cemetaries, the older and more run down the better, not only for picture taking, but also for the peacefulness and sense of history that seems to linger in the old ones.

Not exactly graveyard "art" but a great skyline!! Converted to IR using Fred Miranda's actions.

Hey Ellsworth,

I agree with everything you say. We just don't have the craftsmen (nor the finances) to create the great monuments of yesterday. I love shooting in cemeteries. I have five galleries of some of the Dallas cemeteries. Have a look: http://www.pbase.com/timchen

If you like graveyards you should check out alt.binaries.pictures.cemetaries Its a newsgroup, if you don't have a newsreader setup or a feed let me know. I'll point you to some free ones you can use that are html based.

I have done several over the years,
the one that is in my assorted gallery here is this,
from the 'county' where unknowns are laid to rest.. sad.

Charleston Graves

I have taken many images of graveyards in Charleston historic district. Its odd to see a 200 year old graveyard surrounded by modern structures. here a a few shots from last fall.
