Cory your work is OK, but it could be better. Look at photos that you consider really good--from other people. Why do they work. How are they framed, look at how it exposed.
Some basics to start with
Get a good book on basic photography and really read it.
Get very familiar with the rule of thirds--it does work. Occasionally you need to break the rules, but often this simple idea can create nice image.
Watch you exposures, especially the shadows. Plain black has its place, but if half the photo has a lot of black with no detail it could probably be a lot better.
Subject matter--Close ups are ok, but often lack information. Would a wider shot tell us more? Sometimes not.
Detail----to me that is the Key. Unless I specifically wanting a soft image, special effect. I want clear details in the image. Muddy images are not interesting.
Don't worry, you are doing OK. Photography is one of those things you never stop learning with. If you have a chance, take some classes at a college or University. Go to some seminars etc. Just don't give up.
