My first attempts at portrait (not sure if you would call them that or not) photos. Any thoughts, critiques, suggestions?

To my taste, you got it perfect! ...maybe a little(just a little) USM.

This is a very good shot, hard to belive it's your first ;)

Thanks, I'll try some USM on this batch soon as well as the next batch we have planned to shoot.
My first real attempts doing anything in black and white and my first attempts at photographing a person.

Nice work for a first try. You appear to have a willing (and lovely) model, so keep experimenting and shooting. Pay attention to the details...that is always my downfall.

For example, what's immediately behind or around your model that might distract? How is the image cropped? Is the light giving you good shadows and exposure?

Otherwise, keep at it. And keep sharing.
