Can someone post a quick tutorial on how this is done? I understand PS is needed, so a step-by-step would be appreciated :-).

I believe you need Photoshop to do this.

I have no idea how to do it though as I can't afford Photoshop .
Does anyone know whether there's another software that can achieve the same effect but at a considerably low cost? or none at all if I can just download from the interweb?

As for inexpensive or free software to do this

Inexpensive would be paint shop pro or photoshop elements

free software would be The Gimp

enigmawmn, the easiest way is to use layers. Make a copy of your color pic, desaturate to get B7W, place BW over color layer & then erase the BW part exposing the color version...... 8)

Chile vs. Brazil

Post Tue Jul 20, 2004 8:53 pm

Here's an example of some shots I took at a reacent football game (Chile vs. Brazil). The quality of the original pictures were horrible but I think the partial B&W experiment saved some of them...

The Gallery can be found at: http://www.pbase.com/dcfaria/football

Tell me what you think or how to improve...

I dont want to offend anyone or anything but I am curious as to the reason this process is done. I like most of the images but I personally prefer the images if they were not manipulated in that manner, in fact i dont think it helps the images at all. Is there a conceptual reason for this or is just messing around?(the first batch makes sense as a marketing tool-but then i was never a fan of the market but thats besides the point :)

Well, I can only speak for myself. I took my football pics (above) with a point-and-shoot digital camera (all I dared to bring to the game) and as you might expect the images were horribly unsharp (long exposures) and noisy from high ISO. I played around with them and saw that they looked ok (for me) as B&Ws. The I, as you said, "messed around" a little more and left some color in there...

I guess it was just for fun and I bet that I won't try it again :-)
