Does Anyone know how to do Digital Infrared

Post Fri Sep 10, 2004 4:42 pm

Hi all

Wonder if anyone can advise me how to do digital infrared. I have an EOS Digital Rebel and I asked the shop assistant from Jessops. He said that it is not possible to shoot infrared photo digitally. Yet I have seen on this forum some amazing infrared using digital camera such as G5, Olympus etc. I wonder if the EOS Rebel can do the same. Or does anyone know how to turn an ordinary photograph into infrared via Photoshop Element? I really love the ethereal look of infrared photography and I would really love to be able to achieve it with the Rebel.

Many many thanks

Good day

Puppet

The most informative, and some of my favorite shots in IR are from Joseph Levy. In particular this section:

Hope this helps.

Mr. Levy does do wonderful work, but that workflow is starting out with an infrared image to begin with. to answer your question puppet, i believe fred miranda has and infrared plugin that can be purchased. it works with photoshop to turn regular shots into 'infrared' ones. i've seen it work quite well with some shots, and just ok with others. but then, the same can be said of IR filters. you can find the plugin HERE. click on full description and samples to see what it looks like.

if you want to actually take IR images, i would imagine its possible on the DReb. I used to take them using the 10D. you just need to purchase a filter that fits on your lens, and you'll need a good tripod. to be honest, the DSLR's don't seem to be the best camera's for IR (i use a Nikon Coolpix) but they are quite passable, especially if you don't want to purchase another camera just for IR.

I have both the Digital Rebel and Sony 717. I have gotten amazing results from the 717, this may be one of the most IR capable cameras available at this time. IR with the Digital Rebel is not an easy task. I tried out 3 different lens with my R72 IR filter, the 18-55 EF-s, 70-300 4-5.6 III, and the 50 1.8. Out of these three lens the 50mm 1.8 was the only one that gave me any kind of decent results. The biggest problem seems to be that the Digital Rebel has trouble focusing with the R72 attached to the lens. I tried to pre focus the lens and then put the R72 filter on with little success. My few successful shots were made with 50mm 1.8 at f1.8, ISO 800 and a shutter speed of 1 sec. DOF is also a problem at such a large aperture. I was hoping to sell my 717 and use my rebel for IR and regular photography but after my IR tests on the rebel I decided to keep the 717 for IR only, I am very happy with my decision. Hopes this helps.

Hmm, good info. I was wanting to play around with IR images eventually too, but it doesn't sound like the rebel is the thing to use for it. Guess I'll keep my $60 for the price of a Hoya R72 lens in my pocket for now. :?

I have a gallery of infrareds that I shot with my Canan 10d. It is possible but not very easy to do.

Check it out at:

Good luck

Infared with Nikon digital cameras

I have shot digital IR with 2 of the Nikon digitals, the 950 and the new DSLR D70. I have found Fred Mirandas plug in to be unsatisfactory in that the results are not very good, you will do much better with a digital camera and a IR filter such as a Hoya R72.

Visit my gallery for samples.
