About comments

I wish to inform you of my new comment style.
In order to save time and keep on browsing, I'll comment only by declaring publicly my vote, writing "vote" or something so.

In voting I will follow Slug's suggestion. He writes:
"Vote for photos and galleries that you think are good and that other people will want to see"
"The purpose of the popularity ranking is so we can easily find galleries that other people think are worth looking at."

For Slug, voting is not a prize to an author (photographers are not race-horses, HCB said),
or a mere encouragement, but (more important) a service to pBase.
So I'll vote a lot, and I believe that the search engine called Popular will work better.
It suffers from the lack of voters, and could easily be manipulated, and become prey of well-organized sects

PS
I presume that if I feel the need to vote, there must be a reason even if I don't know exactly which it is.
So, in case you want me to do the effort of explaining it in words,
please Pmail me :D

I agree with you. Of course there is always the chance to comment something extra...

Several people add the "Vote" comment (probably hoping for a reciprocal vote) and don't.

It happens because too few people vote, rocket.
Anyway I am only explaining what I will do, not suggesting anything to anyone!

It is a natural thing I think. Not because the first voted debts something, but because posting a comment is a way to communicate; Almost all the people I know here made her/his first contact by comments... The vote will happen if the pictures are good to the viewers. And, of course, if the viewers want to vote.
It may sound obvious but I felt there is a need to clarify that the main Idea is to vote for good things, and NOT because somebody voted for me before.

To vote for whom has voted for us just because he did that, is totally absurd.

And is also totally absurd that, in a photographic site, the most voted author, month after month,
is a person (or two, I haven't got) who calls painting "the Real Art"

I'm a novice to photography, so not seeing my "hobby" show up in the popular galleries is no real surprise. I take pics for the enjoyment, not for the competition or recognition with the hopes of becoming published.

For me, pBase is a place to store my images for friends and family to see, a place where some of my images might provoke a kind word from another pbase browser, and mainly, a source to experience the photographic endeavours of a wide range of skill levels and camera types. So I make it a point to vote for either a gallery or a pic within one when I see something I like.

But for those who are more professionally or competitively motivated in photography, doesn't voting for someone else's pic/gallery potentially raise theirs above your own? I mean, if I were interested in keeping my pics or galleries at the top, voting for someone else's might bump my own lower. How do people with works in the popular galleries participate in the voting scheme without screwing themselves? Or better yet, it seems it might be what keeps most people from voting more often. Maybe?

Either way... I guess doing the "vote" tag is fine if you're pressed for time or can't think of something to say about the pic. But to me if a pic or gallery is worth voting for, I can probably spend the miniscule effort to say something nice about it as well.

Just my .02

[rant] Edit: Oh yeah, and I think it would be a great idea if pBase could add a feature where the users could see which galleries or pics received votes and how many. On one of my pics for example, I can tell that it has been viewed 26 times, and has 25 direct links, but I can't tell if it's ever been voted for. :?
If you care, it's this pic: http://www.pbase.com/dovey/image/30937119 [/rant]

It only takes 1 vote to make the list, so if you go through the entire 7 day photos and galleries lists more often than once every seven days you'll know because you will have seen it there.

By the way that is a nice shot, insects in flight aren't easy to get .... I've spent lots of time myself trying to get good ones.

lol, yeah, I'm familiar with the current method. That's kinda the idea why a counter visible only to the user would be nice. :D

Right Dovey, but the tag "vote" if also fine if you are like I am, a foreigner writing in his non-native language,
and more, frustrated by the impossibility of using all the shades of meaning requested for a not banal comment!!!
Usually I do my best, but after 6 months of English language full-immersion I begin to feel a bit tired

In deed... It get´s even worst when the picture/gallery have hundreds of comments
Its either that (some feature) or I´m gonna start writing comments in spanish.

That's a good idea! Adding "VOTE" at the end, that's universally understood...
