Getting Full Colour: Editing or Camera and Lense

I know that a Canon Rebel will own my Kodak 6440 any day of the week. But when I see alot of cameras they seem to take in SOOOOOO much colour. Now ive taken tons and tons of pictures and can never get a sky to look like they do. Heres the question.

Is it editing in photo shop that makes peoples colours really stand out or is it the camera and lense? Example

It can be a combination of all of factors you mentioned. Many camera bodies allow you to set color saturation levels, good lenses tend to have better color contrast than less expensive ones, and many people choose to boost saturation when post processing to suit their tastes. Another factor is the use of filters. I would imagine the example you showed made use of a polarizing filter to enhance colors (especially the sky).

I agree with Guy, better lenses will produce better color saturation and contrast. In the end this is a personal judgment call to some extent. When post processing I sometimes will play with the saturation. I generally start with way too much then back off until it looks right, at least for me. I think by going to the extreme first then backing off gives me a better feel for what I am trying to achieve.

By the way, that is my favorite car to photograph while in Bodie. Does anyone have an idea what type it is? I am guessing the vintage to be around 1939 or 40.
