Save the Hubble Space Telescope

Save the Hubble!

Image

NASA administrator, Sean O'Keefe, canceled the last Space Shuttle servicing mission to the world's best digital camera, the Hubble Space Telescope. This mission would replace failing gyroscopes used to control the spacecraft and upgrade the sensors to make it an even more powerful observatory.

Mr. O'Keefe is now reconsidering his decision. Please add your name to the petition advocating saving the Hubble by going here: http://www.savethehubble.org/petition.jsp

I was shocked when I heard the Hubble was going to be chopped. I signed the petition.. but I don't think it'll make much difference.

White House decides to Destroy the Hubble Space Telescope

Post Sat Jan 22, 2005 12:54 pm

His goodbye gift to science, departing NASA Administrator Sean O'Keefe and the White House canceled any plans to service the Hubble. After a National Academy of Sciences panel concluded NASA should use astronauts, not a robot, to carry out a crucial life-prolonging mission to the Hubble Space Telescope, O'Keefe did what he wanted to do all along and sealed his legacy as the man who ordered the destruction of the world's best astronomical obervatory. A shuttle mission could replace failing gyroscopes and insert powerful new sensors. The equipment has already been built and is ready to go.
