The AF sensor needs a single point to focus on, anything else that falls within the AF sensor measurement area may/will cause the focus point to shift. Looking at your images, there seem to be several with overlaps that will have problems.
There were a lot of AF questions about 2 years ago when the 10D was introduced. Canon (and a few Nikon) owners did a lot of AF testing. Here are a few links of value that discuss techniques, etc.
