My "ultimate" wide angle comparison shot. 10.5 to

Post Fri Mar 25, 2005 6:43 am

A lot of discussion and thought is devoted to wondering how much wider 12 or 17 or 24 or "x"mm really is.
I overlaid 6 images from 3 Nikkor lenses to demonstrate how wide it wide.
Here, direct from the 13 floor of the Carnival Elation in the gulf of Mexico is my definitive(yeah, right) WA comparo shot!
This is on a D2H with it's 1.5x factor.
For those of you who think 12mm is wide you ain't seen nothing until you've experienced the 10.5mm!

here's the shot bigger:

And,
here is the link to the full size shot:

And,
The original "undefished" shot.

Defished, undefished ?

Several have asked.
Nikon Capture software recognizes images as having been created with the 10.5mm fisheye.
A box offers to correct it to approximate a rectilinear lens...
Ergo...in Nikonspeak...."I defished it".
See, you to can be a Nikon geek.

Here you see an image-3 parts.
top: original
bottom: "defished"
middle: the crop Nikon Capture defaults you to when defishing the 10.5mm

you're losing a lot of image when you do that, and distorting it even worse. why not just a slightly tigher rectilinear lens if you wanna do that? the distortion will be less and you'll get the same coverage.
