Iceboats

Post Sat Jan 10, 2004 8:08 pm

I did a search on iceboats here and was surprised nothing came up.
We finally got a cold snap (without snow) this week in the northeast and the lake is starting to freeze over. My husband just got an iceboat this summer and he took his maiden sail yesterday and today.

My Ice and Cold Gallery has additional images:

Well --- I thought I was gonna die in the 5 degree weather (wind chill not counted for) taking the pics!!!!!

And if he got any closer to the edge, where the lake is not frozen !!!! :x

I was yelling a lot !!!

Yeah that is in front of our house - not a popullar spot. Bob just got the boat and wanted to take some test rides before he goes to the coves where most of the ice boats sail. I'll add to the gallery when I get more pictures of iceboats.

So what did you want to try?

1. Taking pictures in 5 degree weather (not fun)
2. Iceboating (not fun)
3. Yelling at Bob (fun!)

actually I don't go out in the cold unless I have to. I'll be traveling to a warmer climate after my boy gets two years of college in.

I don't even like sailing in the water, or rowboats. just speedboats, fishingboats and pontoons, gambling boats, river paddelers, rubber rafts, inner tubes, canoes and kayaks. 8)

you know what I mean?

wanna just make this a boat thread? disregard if you want too..
Some of those shots you grabbed are pretty nice. looks like almost more work than regular sailing though.

Jill, that reallllllly looks like fun...bet you can really flyyyyyy...zooooooom! If you DO go off ice into water, does the thing float? If not, it should be made that way IMO.

I just asked Bob -- the boat will float kinda --- it will go under. That is why I was yelling at him!!!!

He got the boat up to about 25-30 MPH today (light winds).
I am hoping to get better pictures of his and other iceboats in the next few days.

I can't sail well so I will have to wait until Bob is done restoring the 2 man iceboat before I try
