My current effort!! any opinions?

Post Tue Feb 03, 2004 7:35 am

Took some pics of some calla lilies the other day with my 300d, they are such beautiful flowers IMO, wondering if anyone has any opinions on whether this one is any good, was taken with my new 105 Sigma macro lens.

Dave, I'm sure you intended it that way, but the out-of-focus look of this one bothers me. I much prefer your sharp lily photos ajd the fine picture of a frozen drop of water.

Thanks for your opinion, I should have said what the pic was called, 'floral dream', i was trying something a bit different, cause i really wanted the background to be really out of focus so it would help the picture. It was taken at an aperture setting of 2.8. I get it judged next week in our local club competition so will be intersting to see what reaction i get.

thanks again

Dave - the soft focus doesn't bother me... in fact I rather like the shallow depth of field. And I really like the colors in the background. What does bother me is the part of the background at the top that's white... it just seems to detract from the rest of the image, and my eye keeps going to that bit - just my 2cents worth - Tracy!

Dave,

Interesting...when I first glanced at this shot I thought yeah that's OK. But then I viewed it from about 2 ft away from my 21 inch monitor. Wow, much better. This image needs to be viewed at a proper distance to get its full impact. Nicely done.

Thank you guys, i showed my photography teacher yesturday and he also remarked about the white space above the lily being the only problem. Now Tracey noticed it too, now i notice it all the time, lol. Have pulled it from next weeks competition I definately need to sort that white bit out, but am having real trouble in photoshop isolating that white space and then apply a sort of graduation filter to it, to blend in the with the other colours, i just cant get it isolated right and accurately. Anyone got any tips, it looks real hard to do with a mouse, also i will have to blow it upto A3 so it needs to look right.

thanks all

Phyllis - are you out there?

Dave - with only a mouse, it could be difficult... if you could get a hold of a graphire pen, your job will definitely be easier. My only suggestion would be to enlarge the image as big as possible so that you can see more clearly what you are doing. Perhaps our resident PS Guru Phyllis has some other suggestions...? Tracy!
