Hi Everyone,

Lately I've been getting assailed by trolls:

I haven't deleted any of the offensive comments in the spirit keeping an open mind.

Just curious: how often do you delete tasteless remarks left in your own galleries?

Inquiringly,

Jim

I would not worry about these types of people.
I just cruised your gallery and am having trouble trying to pick my fav. So many to choose from.

Post your shadows to "Only the shadow knows" here in Show and Tell.

we've only gotten one troll-ish comments to our galleries so far. i sunk to their level and replied, despite my brain telling me not to. but i didn't take it seriously. some people apparently have nothing better to do. you'll notice they rarely have galleries of their own.

on a side note, i was quite impressed with your 'amateurish' photos.

Like they say, criticism is easy. It's art that's difficult.

Delete irrelevant

Post Wed Mar 03, 2004 4:22 am

I would personally delete those irrelevant comments. If somedoby criticize my pictures in a justifiable or constructive way, I would have no problem leaving them... but in your case they are just totally irrelevant and detract from people enjoying your galleries.

I'm with Klaudio -- I'd delete any that are simply mean rather than true critique of your work.

Don't give them any thought -- some people have so much poison in them that it leaks out everywhere they go -- it has nothing to do with you, and everything to do with their sad, distorted view of the world. Just continue to use your camera -- sometimes for fun, sometimes for family, sometimes for art, sometimes for ....

Comments are like digital photography...
good to keep the signal and equally good
to delete the noise.

this was left in my guestbook..i didn't delete it though.

Looking at your pictures I'm amazed at the hypocritical views you have on Louisville. I was born and raised in the west end and I'm not ashamed. I'm also not bragging about it either. You have pictures avbout the West End that bring me memories about how the people down there still dont give a damn. The West end act like they are so oppressed! Many of the people down there choose not to leave the West End. You might think that's a bogus thing to say, but it is true. I left Louisville nine years ago, and every time I come home to visit, it seems like it is getting worse for the west end. Taking pictures saying Village West and Beecher Terrace are housing projects in the West end make it seems like your one of those suburban blacks that just visit the west end and hang down there sometimes but was not raised in the west end. Everybody knows that is from the west end that beecher terrace and village west is considered downtown and showing pictures of some of the houses that are under development or that is just plain ghetto is degrading your own people! BLACKS ARE NOT JUST THE ONLY ONES LOOKING AT THIS SITE. Why dont you show some of the nice areas in the west end like around shawnee and chickasaw park,You just cant brag about Louisville is so this, so that and you show pictures that is good from downtown Louisville. That just shows how Louisville is still behind and how undiversed you all are

I turned off the comments pages because:
A. I don't care what other people think of my pictures.
B. The page views give me an idea of what appeals to viewers.
C. Most comments aren't really anything more than one or two words and therefore not too helpful...if I cared to know them in the first place.
D. Comments mess up the layout of the pages...aesthetics are important to me.

Thanks to all for your advice/support. Since I'd posted this I've gotten a few more nasty comments regarding the title of this gallery.

It continues to amaze me how angry people get when I a) take pictures or b) take liberties with the english language. Yesterday I was accosted because taking pictures of a marble sidewalk too close to someone's multi-unit apartment building, facing towards the street, offended her sense of propriety.

The comments directed at the title are offensive to the commentators in a curious way to me. The brilliant author William Steig wrote wonderfully in pidgin english expressly to appeal to adults and children alike. It's in that spirit that my gallery is so callled. More frightening is, despite how insignificant and inoffensive the word is in the grand scheme of things, how some can not let these things go without disgorging invective.

I'm sure it's just a sign of the times...

Thanks for letting me get that out.

Jim, pichur taker
