Erected under the guidance of the Army Corps of Engineers, the realization of this U.S. stronghold was anything buy smooth sailing. Its construction spanned seven years and was carried out primarily by civilians--such as carpenters, blacksmiths, and stonecutters--whoose many challenges included rough weather, isolation, and the Civil War.
Today, park rangers conduct free tours of this momentous fort, which is loacated on an island in the Southeastern part of the nation. It has been considered a significant port in the 1700's, as well as the Plymouth Rock of its region.
