I have been shooting flower macros from about five feet away with a zoom lens set to 300mm... used ISO 400 because camera is handheld and there's usually some wind. I have better luck with my telephoto zoom that I did with my macro, and this method has the advantage of not having to get really close...and no crawling in the dirt either!
