A lone Marine walks along the soft black sands of Iwo Jima's Red Beach, a place where Marines landed during World War II and fought a bloody 36-day battle against entrenched Japanese infantry. More than 29,000 men died in the fight for Iwo Jima.
The view in the photograph, from the top of Mount Suribachi, is the same view Japanese gunners had on the Marines as they landed. The machine gun fire was so intense, say veterans of the battle, that many men attempting to make the landing in February 1945 were killed before the landing craft touched the beach.
Of the 21,000 Japanese infantrymen on Iwo Jima during the battle, only 216 survived, according to some estimates. Many veterans of the battle for Iwo Jima suffered from severe battle fatigue; what mental health doctors now call PTSD.
