I've had my gallery up for a couple months now at http://www.pbase.com/lonnit/root and I've been wondering about that "vote" link down at the bottom of the pages. I didn't know what it was for. I didn't see any explaination anywhere and I couldn't find one in 'help' either. I decided to come here and see if I could find out what it's all about. So, the deal is that when you see a gallery or shot you like, you click on 'vote' and that is how they start coming up as the most popular, etc? I figured that was just all based on traffic. Is there a formal explaination somewhere? Why is it such a big secret? LOL!

I have to admit that I never really noticed the link to voting as it is kind of hidden away on the page - I'll have to start voting for the excellent pics that I've seen!

I'm very much interested in photos of children, having taken a ton of them over the years, and have several pages of them on my own pbase site, so I'm pretty picky about this photo category. There are plenty of mediocre kid pics out there...more like family snapshots than good photography. Tara Shriner, however, has the knack for good composition as well as good timing...lots of patience and/or lots of film/battery-power! In any case, she succeeds beautifully in capturing "just the right moment." Just look at these great shots!

Unfortunately, there is more to this than clicking on vote. Several times I have viewed an image that showed up in the popular galleries and decided to vote for it. The vote count never incremented. Even after several days. Sooooooo, more to it than just clicking on the vote button.

I was looking through the Popular Photos "all-days" section here: http://www.pbase.com/galleries?view=pop ... period=all

I took the time to go ALL the way through the section, which unfortunately I don't think many folks do. I was shocked to find so many outstanding photos had way fewer votes than they deserve! For example, the first pic in the list below had only 4 votes! I happen to know it won POTD for Chuck Hall, so surely folks would be voting for it if they had noticed it!

I think this discrepancy is because most folks just look at photos in the 7-day list because it's the default setting, so if a photo hasn't received a vote that week, it doesn't appear. Many newcomers and those not used to browsing the Popular sections may not even be aware of the 90-day and all-days options. Of course these overlooked pics were in the 7-day list at one time too, but that was often before voting for individual photos became a common practice, so they really didn't receive their fair share of exposure.

Also, I think that when folks DO look at the 90-day or all-days sections that they only look through so many pages then get tired/bored, so the good ones in the second half are oftened missed completely. Please take some time to go all the way through the Pop Photos "all-days" section (link given above) and I think you will find that many excellent photos have been lost at the bottom of the pile and forgotten. We can fix that by giving them our votes.

Note: Notice also that in the all-days section some have way more votes than they deserve, and these usually occur in batches that have the same person's name under them, have the same number of votes each, and are clumped together, which means the votes occurred all in the same time period. I have to wonder how one person can control so many votes, but we can't unvote a pic, so we have to encourage more folks to vote for the truly deserving ones so they will pass up those whose votes are not legit.
