pstewart wrote:Amelia, the reason Chuck and some others don't like Webdev is that on some browsers it darkens all the pics except the one you pass the mouse over, so you can't see the thumbs. This can be fixed very easily by one little change in the html, which is easy for you to do yourself. There is a thread here somewhere on this very topic. Can anyone recall where this is and post the link for Amelia?

I have tweaked Webdev to take away the feature of darkening the image – then tweaked it a little more (blindly I must add).
I work on a Mac and did not know in the beginning that this style sheet did not look good on all computers – it looked good on mine – so I thought it looked good on everyone's. Please take a look at one of my galleries to see if my tinkering has made a difference.

Here are some modifications, suggestions, complaints and otherwise general and technical banter about the webdev style sheet. Many mods by long-standing pbase members, hacks, html gurus and the infamous webdev in person.

If you read these threads you will learn to change colours, borders, opacities and a few other tricks and treats. If you are interested in css's just head down to the css/html sub-forum and you will find tons of info on css mods and other good html/css/pbase junk.

Here are a few of the larger threads dealing with the topic:

Big improvement Waynette. :D

The original WebDev is a real problem for me. I have to squint to even begin to see the thumbs without rolling over them. I think "requiring" a viewer to mouse every image in ones gallery just to be able to decide if they want to view the image is a bit much. Especially if the gallery has a lot of photos. I like to browse galleries; but, I don't have the time to mouse every image. :(

I for one really love seeing those "Details of how I overhauled my hemi" [with 300 finely-detailed closeups] and "How we painted our house yesterday with old toothbrushes" [with tips on how YOU TOO can do this to your OWN adobe hut!] galleries.
Makes me feel that I'm really doing the right thing slaving over my camera and spending 100's of hours in post-processing to bring my work to all of you.
Maybe I might take up car repair!

OK – just went through all of the 7 Day Popular Gallery – I just think something strange is going on. UGGHHH!
I know there are some beautiful photo galleries out there – have we all cast our one vote for them and now all that it left is car part galleries? I used to get a small thrill if a gallery of mine was ever on the Popular Gallery – now I would have one that is behind the car parts and shots of food on a table – OH boy! "The thrill is gone."

This is really nothing I'm bothered about – just wonder about. WHY?
Life is too short to get mad about these strange things but I did enjoy viewing the Popular gallery about a month ago BEFORE people started have 20 plus galleries popping up and now we have car parts, home renovations, snap shots of parties and food tables.

So please do not stop voting for galleries.

This is just the nature of the beast. There have been many threads recently with at least 100 posts that deal with this subject matter.

It only takes a few votes to make the 7day list. It ain't no big deal. They have the mom and sister help "whore votes" to borrow a term form another forum participant and viola, popular for a week and then never more. No biggie. No real cheating really. Not to strange either when you think about it.

Anyway, the 7day list is mainly just for kicks. Newbies and cheaters and the like. Save for the beloved few good ones of course.

Yes, do keep voting, thats how the 90day and the all-time list got pretty darn good.

You will find them here:

Enjoy

nahhh....just grandma, the boss and the girlfriend voting for some goofy galleries. Maybe a double paid account from work or something casting another.

Really, there has been at least half dozen threads addressing this stuff lately. It's simply a matter of not many votes. Emily, one of the administrators already comically addressed this issue.

Happy Voting

Waynette, you have at least one gallery pretty high up the all-time list. And other(s)/same doing quite well on the 90day list too. I think that is something to be proud of. Relatively speaking, I mean, not many people do that. It takes quite a few votes from unique members to get a gallery up that high on those list(s). Congrats, you done good. :)

I know there is no cheating – I don't know how that could be.
But man these people must really know a lot of people! I personally know only one other person that has an account here. None of my relative have an account here – I probably couldn't beg them to either – they're old-fashion people. My Dad just got a digital camera – I offered to set up an account for him but he declined.

I place votes every day for galleries– now I'm getting the message "yes – we know it's good...blah blah blah" because I have forgotten that I had already voted for it. But if almost the same group of us are voting, and we can only vote once – it seems like after a while – after all the good galleries had been seen and voted for – then all there would be left would the "car parts" galleries.

Naahhh...not quite, you are underestimating the size of pbase bigtime. And you are overestimating the number of votes it takes to get on the 7day list. Really, it only takes a handfull or less and pbase is absolutely huge.

Pbase has so many members that enough will vote eventually. Just keep yourself visible to other pbase members and you will see. Actually, you already have. You, like me, have no family or friends at pbase. Just me. And, I actually peeve a few people off and still manage to get a few votes here and there. My best advise is just keep touring the good galleries and keep yourself in the upload queue with good pics as much as you can.

Keep people coming and you will get a few votes a week on your good galleries and they WILL move up the longer lists as you can see they are doing that already.

Anyway, keep plugging away and good luck and HAPPY VOTING! Just no food or car parts for a while please. :!:

Cheers

OOOPS Thanks for the heads up – I didn't know this.
Beside the silly thrill of see a gallery of mine listed I really like to enjoy seeing the beautiful artwork of others. Photography is my love – next to hiking. Through this site, I get to see the world in places I probably never get will get to travel to. I enjoy sending notes to the artist that I like their work. it's fun meeting new people.

No trouble and I am inspired and motivated by peoples stuff I see here at pbase everyday. I also really enjoy sharing my stuff with others too. The "thrill" of making and viewing a good gallery is pretty cool I think as well. Such a diverse collection of artists to check out and share with. I absolutely love it and I try to learn a little something everyday here.

I hope you have high speed 'cuz tracking your galleries up the 90day and all-time list can suck on a phone modem bigtime. I have noticed if you bring something new and different to the table instead of copying everyone elses style and subjects helps to garner a few votes too. Or just have ultra kick-ass stuff. I predict that hot gellary you have as well as some others just keep moving on up if you keep persistant at it.

Cheers

Don't look now; BUT, 15 in a row by one, 26 in a row by another. All lined up in the 90 day gallery.

Fortunately, they are currently toward the end so by the time I get there I have enjoyed most of the gallery. :D

At this rate, I may have to change my strategy for browsing. :(

The first sign of trouble is almost 400 galleries down the list. You know how long it takes someone to get that far down the list with a phone modem?? That's almost fifty pages down the list! Then we do see the old "cheater" Matson.

Anyway, that just goes to show you one thing. You can try to beat the system all you want. But it really only gets you to about number 500 on the 90day list. It just ain't worth it and you will fade away pretty quickly anyway.

Happy Voting.

I'm tellin' ya, Chuck, go with "random photos." I browse them all the time, and if I like one of the photos I see the whole gallery. I have found some real gems that way, from folks who don't bother with Show and Tell or, apparently, care much about votes or lists. They just put up great pics!
