ICE DIVING IN NORWATY - BRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

Post Thu Mar 03, 2005 9:41 pm

Hi

You can see my pics taken on Lake Hurdal (3 hours drive north of Oslo) this week at http://www.pbase.com/scubamoo/norway_fe ... ice_diving

Here's one of the ice that was cut out of the lake's surface to gain access to the water below:

And one of 2 divers taking the plunge:

And one of a diver shaking hands through an air vent in the ice:

And one at the end of the day:

It was cold, but great fun!
:D

This is a new one to me!

Cold but fun..? I'm don't think the fun could possibly outweigh the cold.

How long do they stay under for?

...in the water it was no colder than in the UK in winter (4°C which is the temperature at which water is at it's densest). I have to admit the temperature out of the water was very cold, but we had adeuqate dry suits, thermal undersuits and the obligatory down jackets, hats and gloves to keep the chill at bay.

The fun factor came from doing something different, I normally dive in the UK and in winter invariably in the same inland lake (Stoney Cove). This can get boring, so a jaunt out on the ice was a real barrel of fun.

What was not fun were the bar bills in the evening...beer in Norway is EXPENSIVE, about £5-£6 for one pint!!
