Genuine Expressions

I would like to see some nice expressions from your models and here your story on how you got them to make this expression.

I’m trying to figure out what to say to get a genuine smile on a models face – in a lot of my photography, I see this blank fake expression so I would like to see some pictures and stories on how to correct this.

I had the urge to shoot some portraits of one of my roommates and did a whole roll of 36 of shots like this one:


Then as we were relaxing and clowning around I noticed I had an "extra" exposure as you sometimes do with film and hit the shutter release without even looking through the camera, (hence the interesting crop), and got my best shot of the day:



Since then I set up the shot first, and using a long shutter release cable, I just snap away while talking with the model and ignoring the camera. Amateur models respond well to this and don't feel like they're being posed.

That is a great tip, I never thought of that
