Thank you all for the excellent entries. I have a short list, but I will not choose - and post the name of - the winner before I can see page 8 of the contest. I've sent a message for help at the customer service...

All the best,

pep

Reflection was this week’s topic. There were a lot of outstanding pictures, and I had a hard time selecting a short-list, let alone three distinguished contestants.
Apart from reflection for its own sake, reflection has been used in this contest for different purposes : To make beautiful abstract pictures (usually symmetric) or very graphic pictures with lots of complexity. To enhance the expressive power of picture. To merge different planes into a single one. Here are some examples that illustrate this point particularly well (many display more than one of these elements) :

Now, sadly I had to choose 3 pictures, which I did reluctantly. Had I done the selection earlier or later, I might have chosen a different podium, such was the overall quality. So, here we go...

Third place comes Jerry Justianto with

Image

for its use of reflection in ¨photojournalism¨ (picture of a veiled woman in Indonesia watching western values symbolised by the beautiful eyelashes and the GUCCI brand in the background)

Second place goes to Peter Eklöf with

Image

for its extraordinary composition, purity, symmetry and clarity (I wish I had a poster of this one!)

The first place goes to Ralph and Kylie Whitten for

Image

a picture where reflection merges two planes into one, showing both children having fun in the garden and their mother (?) worried for them... a timeless and profoundly human picture for a timeless and profoundly human theme.

Well done to all of you! I can't wait to see what the 53rd contest's theme will be.

All the best,

pep
