Preferred file upload size

Post Sun Apr 04, 2004 3:10 pm

I'm a new PBase user. I just posted my first gallery from a Canon G5.

http://www.pbase.com/rwoehler/russia

Not sure if the quality of the pictures is typcal or can be improved. I'm interested in any advice as to the typical file size/format (Jpeg, etc..) for posting pix. For these I just used Canon's zoombrowser to save the file at 30% size and high quality.

Thanks

That is a good question, I would like that one answered as well!
I personally post mine as 800 by XXX. So in photoshop the width will always be 800 & the height proportional (even after a crop). I have found that anything smaller than that will depreciate the vavoom in your pics (if I may be so technical). However, with pics that are slightly out of focus I have found that reducing them to 600 by XXX produces the illusion of sharpness. I always save with highest quality possible (cause I am greedy)!

I am sure that there are better methods, but this is what I use & it works for me!

Ryan, nice looking gallery!

I too size my pics at 800 pixels wide if horizontal. If vertical, I keep the height under 630 pixels, so the whole image fits pretty well on most screens. I usually keep my file size to under 200K, most often around 150K. This is because I have so many photos and don't want to keep paying for additional space. I open them in Photoshop to adjust tone, color and sharpness, then choose "save for web" so I can adjust the quality and size and see the result before saving. I seldom go below 70% quality, and aim for 85% since that looks as good as 100% in this size.

I've been sizing 680x450 to keep file size down. I havent seen a serious amount of difference from 600 to 800 pixels on my powerbook. Maybe someone with a calibrated 22" super monitor might however. I also find it annoying to click on someones thumnail to find a huge picture that would fill a 22" screen and takes two minutes to load. Files like these would kill your memory allotment in no time.
