115th Show & Tell Competition: Rituals

You've got to get by the man at the door if you want to get in to see the band at a club on 6th Street in Austin, Texas during the SxSW Music Festival happening this week. Of course, this ritual occurs each weekend night at clubs all over town, and all over the world.

When you've got even less money coming in, shopping at a dollar store becomes a weekly ritual.

Hmmm, tough choice as I have all these "ritual" shots, all equally bad!

The Masked Dance (or dancers)of the Dogon held on the Bandiagara Escarpment, Mali:

Many rituals are associated with marriage. This is the a Tea Ceremony held during a Chinese wedding in Singapore.

The annual Qing Ming (clear and bright) Festival is also known as the Grave-Sweeping day. The graves of ancestors are cleaned and restored, and paper offerings, candles and incense are burned.

During one of the many rituals in the Vegetarian Festival a Ma Song (meduim) is posessed by the spirit of a god. As the posession ends he propels himself backwards into the air to be caught by the onlooking crowd.

On Good Friday, thousands of faithful climb the steps of a Mount Adams church called Holy Cross - Immaculata.
They pray the rosary at each step.
This is a 143-year-old tradition of praying and climbing the hillside steps to Holy Cross-Immaculata Church in Mount Adams, Cincinnati, Ohio.
Services start at mid night and go to midnight Friday, every Good Friday.

'five candles' representing my daughter's fifth birthday, here's she's snuffing after the teacher told
the stories about her to her classmates. A little ceremony they have in waldorf school.

Advent garden in a waldorf school. My daughter lighting a candle. All is quiet with just the music from the lyre.
Each child in turn, holding a red apple with a small unlit candle inserted into it,
slowly walks along the spiral path and lights the candle from the center light.
On the return the child places the apple and candle on one of the golden stars.
When all the children have had a turn, the garden path is aglow from all the smaller lights.

The persistent prayer, symbolized by this candle, which after a drizzle in the churchyard was still alive.
