Hi all,

sorry to have kept you 'waiting' for a new round of the S&T contest. I tried to use the new semi-automatic system, but I did not succeed and support did not answer the call. So it's back to the good ol' handwork.

The subject for this edition is "Beautiful ugliness". I like to see the combination of beauty and ugliness. You can interpret this in many ways:
1) Contradictory subjects: something beautiful next to something ugly
2) Contradiction of subject-background, e.g. a flower on a battlefield or a turd in a bed of roses
When done very well these two could be nice, but I think some further interpretations are perhaps more interesting:
3) Something that is considered ugly becomes strangely beautiful in special light, or because it is used in a special way or just because you happen to have a thousand of them in your image.
4) Something that is considered ugly in communis opinio but that you are strongly attracted to (e.g. your aunt's extremely big nose). Show us why with your image.
5) Turning the idea around I'm also interested in things that are considered beautiful, but that you think are ugly because they are boring or cheap.

And yes, you can apply these to people as well as things. It may be more interesting even with people, but also more tricky .... be careful. I do not want to get you into trouble here.

I hope you get the idea. I'm looking forward to the beautiful and ugly fruits of your imagination.

Just a random example:

Cheers,
Jeroen Bosman (hiero)

Interesting subject and here's my first contribution here in a long time....

Dug through the "archives" and found these great images of the Barrio Antigua in Monterrey, Mexico. Here's one:

An offshore oil rig is anything but beautiful. Beautiful to an an accountant, maybe. However, they have a certain quality borne from symmetry.

An old toppled dead tree doesn't sound very special, but in black and white it can take on a life of it's own....
