Comments on this image? Good or bad. I'm interested in what kind of reaction folks here have to it.

 OMG! What a beautiful photo! I would love to have 40x25 duplicate of this on my wall.

Would you be kind enough to explain how this photo was captured?

Thanks very much for the kind words, MNJ.

It was shot in RAW format with a Minolta A2 and
EXIF data is 1/100s f/11.0 at 19.5mm iso64

The image was rather heavily manipulated in Photoshop CS basically using little more than Levels, Curves, Color Balance, and Hue/Saturation adjustment layers and Shadow/Highlight.

Also thanks for the tip on 'thephotoforum'. I'll have to drop by there and give them a look. First I've heard of it.

Stunning. This cries out for wall display. Reminds me of some of the "romantic(?)" era oils!

It would be interesting to see the original and how you stepped through the changes. or a series through the year.

The Original

Post Thu Jul 01, 2004 10:10 am

Thanks, Craig. The vast majority of responses I've gotten in the other places I posted the same request for comments was the image's likeness to an old painting, which was my initial reaction to it as well. Surprisingly I've only gotten one negative response. I thought I'd get a lot more flack from the 'thou shall not post-process' crowd for having committed art.

The original looks like this...

I think we have to remember that the magic sky moments are very atypical. Even being lucky enough to capture one is much a matter of luck (even with research, constant following the weather reports, etc.). The romantic (I believe it would be the romantics) took advantage of light and clouds, etc., in their paintings. But it's a matter of trying to create an effect, a feeling and and not necessarily a documentary record of the place. I think it becomes a problem only if it's passed off as a documentary.

If you compare the skys in these, you can see the results of added work: http://www.pbase.com/image/24185218

For that matter, checking the rest of the gallery shows the changing skies of the day.

I did this, MNJ, and they seem like a fine bunch of folks there. I was expecting the image to be ripped to shreds but the response has been quite positive. Thanks again for the tip.
