What on earth is the big deal? I had a bear spend three months at my house a couple of summers ago-- most of the time on my west deck. Of course, here on the beautiful south coast of Oregon you can hardly turn a corner without tripping over a bear. The local bear biologist (the fact that we have one should tell you something!) told me that in Curry County we have more bear than there are in all the rest of the state of Oregon-- which makes finding one of them napping in the sun by one's hot tub not an altogether unusual experience.

Except this appears to be a small grizzly or brown which means one or the other of the photographers may be between momma and baby and that's not necessarily a good place to be. Black bears wander into the foothill communities around the greater Los Angeles area as well, but that often results in a lot more attention! Newsvans, cops, F&G biologists, wardens, etc. One of our neighbors was a biologist for DFG and use to bemoan the fact that people seem to notice the bears most often well after midnight.

She's a 4 year old female brown bear no cubs yet. Maybe next year. She is very good about us photogaphing her. But again she is a wild animal and should be treated as such. This guy did right my staying put and holding his ground. And she just walked on by.
