Aurora Mask

Post Tue Sep 21, 2004 9:11 pm

The Northern Lights were not visible so while I waited for their appearance, I decided to shoot across the highway (which only got a car every 10 minutes or so) toward the mountains and see what happened after 10 minutes. This is the result. As it turns out, the aurora energy was bathing the clouds, but it was too faint for the naked eye to see. Thus, the clouds turned a bright green, and make an other-worldly-like mask as they lie on the mountains, drifting softly through them. Below the green mask of aurora-lit clouds, a car and a truck leave their trail across the image. Above the stars spin in a circle, showing evidence of a picture taken facing Northward. If you look closely you can see the entire Big Dipper just above the mouth of the Mask.

MKII with a 16-35 mm lens. 19mm, 10 min. ISO 1600. The areas with -some-light like the road show a pretty grainy area, but the dark sky is very clean for 1600. Sometimes you just get lucky. (although my luck involved staying up all night and driving about 400 miles each way to get to where I wanted to shoot from :).

That is just amazing. What a shot! It is truly an out of this world, ghostly and beautiful image.
