Collection of Root Gallery Designs

Post Thu May 18, 2006 7:57 am

Hi,
Here's a list i've been compiling for a while. It's long enough now to post. Maybe this will be useful for new comers to get an idea of what is possible and who to contact if they want to imitate the gallery. Imitation is the best form of flattery after all.

I am categorizing it into what I think went into it. Feel free to let me know if anything has to be changed. I can always edit this post and add more to it. I am sorry I don't know some of the names.

Karthik, I am flattered to be on your list! My root gallery is mainly done
through CSS. I have added the links above the line with html and also
used a conditional comment to deal with an IE-issue, but that's it!

I have no training whatsoever in html or css, and only started looking
into it (here and elsewhere on the net) when I became a pbase-supporter
half a year ago, so my root gallery is kept very simple...

I really like Henk's (oochapan) root-gallery.

As for the other slideshows (nostromo et.al.), they don't work in my main
browser, which is Safari (I am on a Mac). So to see those slide-shows, I
have to fire up my firefox...

I find it amazing what can be achieved with only css, especially when
looking at your root-gallery, Karthik!

Excellent list Karthik!

Just to let you know, soulbrotha4620 changed his URL. There is a redirect on his old main page.

Up until this week I had a slideshow. It stopped working when I tried to add a button into the right column. Now I can't get it to work at all. Geuss its back to the drawing board. Come check it out in a week or two, I wanna be on your list ;)

Cool. I am on that list, lol I am not really happy with my site yet, expect some crazy stuff one day when i have time to do some 3d work. Right now it will do though. Also flash is really great for video.

See here for an example.

Hello Style Gurus! 8)

I would like to say thanks to some of the guys that are listed up there. We, the style-guru community have done great efforts for the last three years in order to create better, great displays for our stuff here at PBase. Many thanks to Karthik, Arjun, Srijith, Mikey, Henk, Tomas, Abdul, Luis, Jypsee and Jeff who have helped me understand the codes of PBase. We´re a great colective and trust me when I tell you being part of this has made much more fun many aspects of my life...

Now to the point: HTML Rule!
Why? Because HTML is the starting point of everything. And we´ve created all this depending on what PBase´s main code allow us to do.

I would like to ask PBase for a few more things to give us more control of our galleries:
- More flexibility to design our stuff. Description is not enough. Why not another box to add codes UNDER the gallery tables?
- A new CSS MANAGEMENT system... I´m sure I´m not the only one that has a huge mess in his CSS. Right?
- Let us use more SCRIPTS, like JAVA. It is necessary because we create faster than what PBase can offer. I would like to see PBase more OPEN to those changes. Slideshow for instance, could be a formal feature easily...
- CONTROL over the SIZE of the image.
- MORE than 128 Characters to control our Copyright statement. 128 is not enough for a creative commons license for instance. And if you look at that list you`ll see that many of us do think CC is a good idea.

Ok.. thank you so much and: Go Go HTML! :D

Great list Karthik, and some outstanding and very creative work by many members. A lot of great designs to be inspired by!

I am not too fond of flash, I prefer the html and css combo. I have worked a bit on my gallery design lately, mostly the css and I have been inspired by Arjuns design and got some great help from Olaf. I like the slideshow by Luis Borruel and may add that into the design somehow in the future.

Thanks to all for pushing the limits of pbase and showing us all what can be achieved!

"Basic Pbase is good enough"

Post Sun May 21, 2006 9:11 pm

Excellent list, despite that, I voted "Basic Pbase is good enough". When I considered entering PBase (nearly) 9 months ago, my one (and only) doubt was that the the galleries looked very similar. Today, I regard it a strength. This does not mean it's no room for improvement. I would like an option to choose "a repeting link bar" on top of all pages like this one >> http://www.pbase.com/dougkess/retouch. Is there anybody who can tell me a simple way to get it?

You can use mine and just edit it for your own galleries....

Just enter this into your gallery description field...

Editted out code...too much junk in my linkedsubgalleries. You can view source on the page you're interested in and you'll see the little block of code for linked subgalleries. Just copy and paste and change the links to suit your galleries and away you go.

Hope this helps....

Make it three  Thanks, Karthik. I'd have responded sooner, but since I can't tell what I have, or haven't read I'm not in the forum much these days. :( I'll vote for flash, there's some great galleries in your list using it.
