EOS 3 w/PB-E2 battery consumption...

Post Sun Jun 18, 2006 3:47 pm

Hello...I'm a newbie to this forum and I have a question that maybe you good people can answer...

I bought a used EOS 3 w/PB-E2 batter grip from Adorama.com and I installed new fully charged HiMD batteries yesterday around 2pm and was playing with the camera to familiarize myself the the controls and features. I worked each aspect of the camera; single shot, high speed, etc...for about 1/2 and turned the camera off. When I turned it back on around 10pm the batteries were completely drained. Before I went to bed I put all eight of the AA rechargables back in the charger, this morning only four of the eight show a full charge and the other four still charging.

I've never seen a camera drain batteries so quickly and completely as this one did which leads me to believe that maybe the camera or the battery grip is defective.

I put conventional non-rechargable batteries in this morning to see if maybe I got a bad batch of rechargables. So far I the regular batteries have not discharged all the way...yet.

Any ideas?

I have a battery grip on my EOS-3 as well, and have not seen anything like that with rechargeables. Try it again. If the batteries drain in such a short time there is certainly something wrong - most likely with the camera. The battery grip is mainly a dumb device that lets you use different power sources, so my guess is there is something wrong in the camera that causes a high drain.

I've went with the AA alkaline batteries and I still have full battery charge. I called Canon this morning and they suggested that the NiMH puts out only 1.25 v while the alkaline puts out 1.5 so that could be the issue.

I thought that as long as the batteries were the same size that it wouldn't matter whether they were conventional or rechargables.

I cleaned the contacts on both the batteries and the charger and re-charged the batteries...I'll put them in today and see if that works. Otherwise I have no problem going with conventional batteries.
