Show & Tell - Photo Contest #20

Post Wed Sep 20, 2006 7:35 pm

Welcome everybody to the 20th edition of the *Show and Tell - Photo Contest*. Originally hosted by David Yuckert. Many thanks again to David for getting this going and providing a great opportunity for us to share some great pictures.

Thanks also to Colin for selecting my picture as the winner of his "City Centre" contest - I am now in turn delighted to host the next theme, which is ...

WATER IN ACTION

This contest is about water and its movement. Don't limit yourselves to scenic photos and feel free to get creative. I would enjoy seeing photos where someone or something is involved in the shot. So...if you have a faucet that drips or a friend that needs a dousing you have a submission!

I am also asking that everyone submit only the medium version of their photos (Rule #3). I realize that the medium version does not show all of the detail in many photos and I will look at the larger sizes as well so links to your photos will be appreciated. If you have questions or need assistance drop me a line at gailsowder@comcast.net.

contest #18:
http://forum.pbase.com/viewtopic.php?t=23810

How it Works:
1. The host gives a topic.
2. You post up to 3 of your images that go along with the topic.
3. The host chooses the winner 7 days after the contest was started.
4. The winner becomes the host for the next week. If the winner does not post a new contest within 2 days, the 2nd place winner is the new host.

The Rules:
1. Photos must be hosted on pbase.com.
2. Photos must be embeded in your post. See http://forum.pbase.com/viewtopic.php?t=18022
3. Post only the medium versions of you picture. Larger versions will not be considered.
4. Only enter 3 photos per-contest.
5. The host is not eligible for their own contest.
6. Any picture you've taken is eligible regardless of time taken and camera
7. You can do all the post processing you want.
8. Have fun.

This contest will close on Wednesday, September 27th, and winners will be posted on Tuesday, September 28th.

Good Luck!

I'd like to make one suggestion. When you choose the winner of the contest, please post the shot and maybe a bit about why you chose the scene. I've been looking at this series, and other than contest #18 I have no idea what the winning shot was. I would like to see the host of the contest announce the point at which the contest has ended and then within a reasonable period of time (maybe a day) post the winning shot as well as any honorable mentions. Thanks for taking my suggestion into consideration.

My water shots have a unifying theme of tranquility.
Two shots for starters and I have one more in mind.

Image

Three tundra swans on Rockhold Creek, near DC. Shot is
handheld, because, you know, there wasn't time to set up tripod.
This is in predawn minutes. In foreground is ancient oak tree
hanging out over creek. Lots of wasp galls are present in this oak.
No photoshopping, the amazing color is real.

Image

The fountains in the sculpture gardens of the National Gallery of Art.
This place has a tranquilizing effect on visitors.
Shot at high speed and stopped way down to stop the water and
get the graphic look. The day was actually dazzling bright.
No photoshopping to this one either, except to resize.

And here is my third.

Image

The casual viewer may take this as merely a muddy, rutted lane.

To me, it follows an ancient logging RR right of way down to the river
where the old log bridge was washed out many decades ago. To me
that is my secret fishing spot where I can catch my limit of trout before breakfast.

To a frog, however, this place is his dream vacation puddle.
And there were many frogs in these puddles this frog vacation
season. All the frogs I approached about the matter declined to
have their pictures taken though. They all dived deep and held their
breath until I left. I am sure they are sharing their frog stories now
about the time godzilla came through.
