44th Show and Tell Competition: WINNER

Post Wed Apr 11, 2007 12:10 am

Thanks to all who sent in entries for this very fun contest. It is, I believe, a great way to connect with others' work and practice your creative shooting and self editing.

Sorry again for being a bit tardy in the time line; posting, closing date, judging and all that. I was caught by surprise and really not well prepared to run the next contest as I did not know that was the winner's "prize."

So future winners ... be ready to accept your prize of the administrative joy of conducting the next contest.

It was actually fun.

Without any further delay ...

Joy Buapromma's church photo is your winner!

Please join me in congratulating her and the other members for their work.

A few comments ...

This is a photo that is just simply nice to look at and really shows some changes ... some directly, some not so directly. Easy on the eye, good focal point, balance, lens choice, etc. Solid.

So there are a few different levels and layers that make this photo boss among all the others. From what the frame shows, it appears there was some real contemplation and preparation that went into making this photo.

I think that point is worth mentioning because many shooters go out and just photograph just what they happen to see in front of them compared to others who will previsualize what it is they want their photo to accomplish visually ... thinking of its look, smell and feel before going out to make it.

This photo really works well for this theme.

So nice work Joy, this image is a joy to look at ... pun intended!

Aaron Collins' photo of an older gentleman trying to figure out how to work his cell phone is the runner up. Nice work. Aaron just joined PBase.com in last month according to the join date on his profile page. Welcome to PBase Aaron. Great job on making and selecting this image for this theme.

Original post

First of all, I want to remind everyone to read the rules before posting. There were a few great entries that weren't posted at medium size, so they had to be disqualified.

Also, please remember to include a link back to the original photo (the photo's page or large.jpg/original.jpg), as it's nearly impossible to judge a photo at medium size only.

Finally, a note about direct linking. Please follow these guidelines when posting your images in the forum:

http://www.pbase.com/help/direct_linking&id=465

Otherwise, when the servers are updated the links will break! Past photos which were posted incorrectly (many which would have made the cut), have been excluded.

Now with the administrative remarks out of the way, let's talk about the pictures!

We all know that there are many changes in life. Many of them are on a global scale. Some are on a much smaller scale.

So, without defining the theme to death, let's see your wonderful images that speak to the theme:

"For the times they are a-changin' "

To help -- maybe -- here are lyrics from Bob Dylan's song that also follows the same thinking about changes. This does not mean the photographs must parallel this song. Just food for thought folks.

Enjoy and have fun!

Come gather 'round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You'll be drenched to the bone.
If your time to you
Is worth savin'
Then you better start swimmin'
Or you'll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come writers and critics
Who prophesize with your pen
And keep your eyes wide
The chance won't come again
And don't speak too soon
For the wheel's still in spin
And there's no tellin' who
That it's namin'.
For the loser now
Will be later to win
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don't stand in the doorway
Don't block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
There's a battle outside
And it is ragin'.
It'll soon shake your windows
And rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come mothers and fathers
Throughout the land
And don't criticize
What you can't understand
Your sons and your daughters
Are beyond your command
Your old road is
Rapidly agin'.
Please get out of the new one
If you can't lend your hand
For the times they are a-changin'.

The line it is drawn
The curse it is cast
The slow one now
Will later be fast
As the present now
Will later be past
The order is
Rapidly fadin'.
And the first one now
Will later be last
For the times they are a-changin'.

Wow, way to pick a good challenge... I love it. It was great running through my photos to see what could qualify. Explanations provided in case my train of thought isn't clear...

It's not all depressing, over thousands of years, amazing things can happen.

I took this in Tracy Arm Fjord (Alaska) where this lonely iceburg was just one of a few fragements left of a giant glacier that once existed. If Al Gore reads this, he'll be proud...

Shanghai is one of the most rapidly changing cities in the world. Taken in 2004 June, these photographs show an old residential enclave, slated for redevelopment.

Shanghai in Transition 1

Image

The banner reads 'Hasten Redevelopment of Old Areas, Improving Living Conditions.'

The words painted on the wall reads 'Demolish.'

The place is immediately west of the old Shanghai City Centre. Here, old Linong type houses are constantly demolished or gentrified for the sake of providing more commercial and entertainment facilities to expatriats and the upper income earners. The original residents often get relocated to improved housing schemes located in suburbs far away from the city centres, but most do not know what's really in for them.

Moving on.

what once were great shrines for the hindu gods and only worthy of the king and his loyal priests, dancers and servants... now 1.7 million tourists annually flock to this famed temple... One of the 7 wonders of the Ancient World.
