### 47th Show & Tell Contest ### [Winners List]

Post Wed May 23, 2007 7:38 pm

[My apology for posting one hour behind the schedule. My mobile internet connection was constantly down.]

This has been an intense competition. I have had a hard time in weighing my choices - there are a really large pool of excellent photos this time around, in the end those entries which in my judgment best go along with the contest topic top the list.

First, a few words about the subject. I was sifting through a Show and Tell forum thread on alternative galleries in Pbase when I came across someone's site that chronologically documented his life after he got cancer. (Erichmangl, was it you who gave us the link? Thanks!) It was quite an experience to view the photos. So I thought it might be interesting to give to all a challenge topic that conveys the sense of the rush of something, be it a time, or a space, arrested.

To adhere to our tradition, we start with honorable mentions. I want to emphasize these are works I find truly remarkable in their own right despite the fact that I didn't include them into Top 10.

The 10th place
By Hans-Peter(hphdk) http://www.pbase.com/hphdk/image/78239781/

Image
A serene Buddha amidst the urban chaos, the juxtaposition here is just incredible.

The 9th place
By Steve(steveprice) http://www.pbase.com/steveprice/image/56371485/

Image
Sublime black&white rendition. The point of the view offers such a unique angle. Here even the random passers-by help to give a fleeting moment an elegant form and shades.

The 8th place
By Sergey(slkorolev): http://www.pbase.com/slkorolev/image/65694749

Image
The nostalgic mood is striking. I like the way you termed it: one of some unsorted oddities...

The 7th place
By Stu(stuegan): http://www.pbase.com/stuegan/image/75372290

Image
I cannot help but thinking about Pink Floyd when seeing this image, too. I also think of alienation, some social passage issues..but in brief, I feel this one evokes thoughts in an unexpected way. Very subtle, but strong.

The 6th place
By Paulo(paulorbaptista): http://www.pbase.com/paulorbaptista/image/70346037

Image
The composition and the visual contrast here look very unique. The dark tone of this photo has drawn me in right since my first glance. I find it simply a poetic expression.

The 5th place
By Terry(terrybowker): http://www.pbase.com/terrybowker/image/73017201/

Image
That "Transit" mark makes this photo a great entry here. Beautiful light, really a good portrait work. And the colors give it character!

The 4th place and the 3rd place are a tie. In the order of entry time:

By Rene(halesr): http://www.pbase.com/halesr/image/43560046

By Alain(alain_lestrade): http://www.pbase.com/alain_lestrade/image/71633694/

Two pieces of sustained beauty out of transient flux. I treasure them.

The 2nd place
By Paul(paul_teixeira): http://www.pbase.com/paul_teixeira/image/24352806/

This is a photo that speaks. It's a somewhat poignant image, but I appreciate the spirit of Realism herein. Glad that Paul joined our contest and shared his work. :)

The first place goes to Tim G(hoopy):

A good photograph always asks as many questions as it answers. I was wondering, upon seeing Tim's photo, if the Christian church was indeed under fire in our times. In the past it was the church that passed down the generations cultural heritages, but what about now? Somehow somewhere in the photo you even remotely get a sense of humor, or, if you are optimistic, you may even read a bit of hope. Tim's photo is my winner pick out of this contest.

Thanks again for all the fantastic photos from all the participants. Pbase is such a large and diversified photo community, it was really a joy to discover other talents' work through internet, really much to learn!

Congrats to the winner - a great choice.
It's been interesting to look through the photos and the way people have interpreted the theme differently.
