165th Show & Tell Competition: Unreplicable

Post Wed Jul 21, 2010 8:33 am

Thanks chasp.. I really appreciate winning this competition with such high quality entrants.

For me, a good photo is one with a combination of the following:

1. Technical.. focus, sharpness, lighting, PS work
2. Composition.. Does it work ?
3. Unforgettable.. there are many good shots, but will I remember them tomorrow ?
4. Unreplicable.. So you've taken a good shot... can I copy it ?

The focus (no pun intended) of this competition is Unreplicable.
I want to see something really unique... really special, and if I look through my portfolio of photos, I see nothing like it.
I want to be left thinking: "I really wish I had taken that shot, but I've got no chance"

Here are some examples:

Fan Tailed Cloud - It's the only time in my life that I've seen this kind of formation.. I was lucky to have the camera.

Dove - Birds in flight is not new, but the background with the rolling countryside and church make this difficult to replicate.

Bubble - I spent 5 days enrolling all members of my extended family to blow bubbles, and I chased them around the garden. This is a lot harder than it looks.

Check out the proud look on the cormorants' face as their friend squeezes ones out.

Good luck !

Nick

Shooting Star above the Three Mittons

A nice sky of stars would have made for a great photo. The shooting star in perfect position makes the shot for me.

Jordan Pond Sunrise

I have never seen the pond look like this again. The mood, sky and fog on the lake make this a special shot of Jordan Pond.

Delicate Arch Sunrise

Hey, its not your standard Delicate Arch shot...

Three from my PaD Gallery, the gallery where images are rarely planned and these three certainly weren't.

Everything just worked - moonrise, sunset over my shoulder, berries popped, and there was the spider!

Riding the bus to Soller, Mallorca- saw this little girl just loving the scenery outside.

These aren't my footprints. I just happened to pass by someone who just walked through the sand, and the wave came along.

There's no way to replicate this- a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet Dad. =)

It took me almost forever to compose this picture. It was almost impossible to wait for the two dogs in the background to keep their head the way I needed them to pose.

This certainly was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I was staying in Ilullissat, Greenland when a massive glacier broke of the Ilullissat icefjord and drifted into the bay. You rarely see the bay this covered with icebergs.

How often can you catch a ful lunar eclipse?

So basically you are saying we can replicate it, we might just have to wait a few days for it to happen again. :P

Great shot.

Try to replicate that: Old vine Zinfandel and a duckling!

Perfect casts of leaves made from ice....

I've never come across stacks of pallets in a little lake before or since...
