Check out today's most popular photo (contains nudity)

Post Thu Dec 01, 2005 1:51 am

Not the most popular gallery but the most popular photo.

What do you think about it?

What do you think about this photo being in the Popular Section?

:!: :!: Please note before checking this out that this photo has nudity.

what's your problem really, bob ? trying to be a moderator or are you so much attracted by the photo that you want everyone to see it ?
your job must be pretty boring if you have nothing better to do than to care about such things :-)

Erich, do you have anything substantiative to add to this conversation other than your personal attacks?

It's called stirring the pot and, personally, I think it's pathetic. I'll bet he's already bugging the crap out of Slug, though I haven't heard anything from either Slug nor Emily regarding this image.

I created the image he refers to and I've shown many people, including my nephews' girlfriends. They appreciate it as the art that it is. Of course, they're not stuffed shirts like some Americans and Canadians (I am Canadian myself); one of my nephews' girlfriends is Asian (Cambodian actually) and the other's Polish.

If you have a problem with the image, look to the right of the top voted photo for the last 7 days, where you can be content seeing a dude peering at a billboard.. In other words, get over it and move on.

Afterall, if we are going to object to images based on his or her particular disdain for it, I have a problem with a few myself; most notably the "gay pride" type photos on pBase, but I'm certainly not going to raise a stink and try and get them restricted or otherwise limited.

Once we start down the path of censorship, where do we stop? Will pBase remain a free art domain to some, or will politically correctness spoil this site as it has Smugmug and all the other photo posting sites with arcane rules?

Thanks, Bob. I would not have seen this photo if you had not drawn my attention to it. I know when looking at Pbase with my 10 year old son that nudity is a strong probability. So what? As a mother, I certainly hope my son grows up to have a sex life. Too many Americans let their kids watch obscene violence on TV and in movies but shield their eyes when it comes to the human body and human sexuality. Seems priorities are a bit mixed up here?! Since you are offended by the exquisite female form, tell me... what do you think of nature's imitations thereof:

It really bugs me when people show up on national tv with a five-o-clock shadow... so I guess I'll commend her for shaving before going public.

I have mixed feelings about it being in the popular section... the image is sharp, lighting is good, and the colors look ok on this monitor. The issue becomes censorship... I'll leave that up to pbase since it's their site, and to parents as to whether or not their children should view pbase unaccompanied.

If an art gallery wanted to display some of your works, would you decline the offer or refuse to let your family attend just because there might be some nude shots from another photographer being displayed at the same time? The same choice is available for each person here. While I hate to have to "warn" friends and family that poking around on pbase outside my galleries might uncover some artistic nudes, the alternative is a censorship of art (as some define art). I can't imagine a museum or art gallery that bans paintings or sculptures depicting nudes, but it's up to the curator (in this case pbase). My way of protesting "popular" pics or galleries is to not click on things which might upset me and not vote on things which I think might be better suited in a more secure location from youngsters. That's the system, and the Terms of Service don't guarantee a "child friendly" or "work safe" view of photography.

Personally, I don't care to see nudes in the popular galleries because most of them seem to draw votes simply from the lack of clothing and have little to no artistic value (imo) above the countless naked pics found everywhere on the internet. However, I will give credit where credit is due: this was one of the more artistic nudes I've seen here. But with the holidays coming up, I can't believe someone would take a pic like that and miss the opportunity to put a little dollop of whipped cream on top with some green and red sprinkles. Amateurs...

I'm disappointed.

I'm just new here and this is one of the first things I see. Sure the body is beautiful, but it's not for exploitation. It's pathetic trying to pass off porno as "art". It's just a disguise for perverts.

This photo is not porn, and it's not perverse. It's a nice composition of curves. Some will say it's porn, others will say it's an artistic study of curves, others will simply say it's a nicely composed picture.
Whatever you say about it: it says nothing about the picture, but it does say everything about the person stating the comment. In that respect, this is a fantastic image, because it makes people show their inside. Food for thought...

What do I think about it? I think it is a work of art. The fact that some dead Italian sculpturer working for a dead Pope didn't create it does not lessen the fact that it is art.

Should it be in the Popular photo section? Only if it gets the votes. It did.

I may or may not be a pervert. That is way beside the point. This is not pornography. I find the beauty in the form and lighting and overall composition.

Who are you to dictate what is pornography and what is art?

While I agree, it can be seen as erotic art, "pornography" is a label that does not fit here. There is no penetration, there is no "pink," as some might call the inner tissues that reside in the orifice that lay beneath the skin portrayed in this image. There is no sexual act. It is a body part like any other. It just so happens that we do not feel it should be shunned or hidden like a dirty secret.

As for the "pervert," comment, I would say that you have made it perverse in your own mind rather than celebrating the beauty of the image itself.

As my wife (and the subject of this image) reads these comments alongside me right now, she has no feelings of exploitation and she feels nothing but disgust and disdain for the people sitting in judgement of her figure. Exploitation defined is, "an act that exploits or victimizes someone (treats them unfairly)." My wife feels none of this and has expressed contempt for your representation by proxy.

However, for us to tell you that you cannot state your feelings would be as bad as it is for you to sit in judgement of an image and that you probably can't fathom the beauty of it.

For you, I feel nothing but sorrow.

Well said, Ray. I too feel sorrow for these people who can't enjoy the human figure as art. Or worse, not only can't enjoy it, but have such negative reactions to it. Art has used the nude for - what, thousands of years? And still there are prudes! Ah, well, their loss. (Actually, our loss too... they're probably all to blame for the Republicans being in power)

But what's this about gay pride images... please tell me I don't detect a hint of homophobia there, Ray?!

Thanks Murray, for your support. I didn't mean to come off as homophobic, as my wife and I have friends and family who are gay. In fact, one of my wife's cousins is married to another man. I have no problem with that and support their union, here in Canada, 100%.

I am not against gays but I, personally, skip over images of men kissing each other. It's just a personal preference to do so. That is what I would expect others to do with my images if they do not appreciate or like them.

I really do not want to see images of gay pride filtered either. My comments were simply an example of how censorship could spiral out of control if Mr. Townsend's agenda here were realized; which is an attempt to stimulate someone to censor pBase and our artistic freedom.
